The
Forth rail bridge. The world's first major steel bridge.
The steel could be cast into girders and is very strong but it is prone
to an irreversible change. The steel needs painting to
prevent rusting (the irreversible change) caused by a
reaction between oxygen, water and iron in the steel. This is a continual
task as no sooner have they finished then they need to start again from
the other end!
