aphids

These aphids are feeding on the stem of a plant. They don't actually eat it - they drill a hole into it using their long pointed mouthparts and then just let the sap inside flow into them. The sap contains water and food that the plant has made. So these herbivores get all their food by drinking. They get so much of the sap that they often pass some of it out at the back - ants come along and drink this up - the liquid the aphids give out is sometimes called honeydew because it is sweet. Not that I've ever tasted it!!
