The rocks on this shoreline would have been much higher many years ago. The pounding of the waves has worn them down. The parts that are still sticking our of the water are harder ones than those that were in between. The softer the rocks the more quickly they are eroded by the sea. There is a salt water swimming pool in the picture - the straight walls are made from concrete. Despite the pounding of the waves, seaweeds are living on the rocks. They have a very tough fastener called a holdfast to grip onto the rock.
