This
is a picture of a sweet chestnut twig in the summer,
it has male and female flowers on it.
The long thin parts sticking up are the male ones, they contain the anthers.
The pollen is made in them. Further down the round, spikey
bits are the female parts which contain the ovary which
will eventually form the fruit containing the seeds
which are chestnuts. This will only happen if they are
pollinated. You can see that these flowers are pretty
dull in comparison to the ones you may know. Even so they are insect
pollinated unlike other dull flowers, which are usually wind
pollinated. Sweet chestnuts are tasty when roasted. Some people put them
into the stuffing for their Christmas roast turkey.
