Sycamore moth caterpillar. The hairs make it pretty unpleasant for any predator who might want to eat it. This one was feeding on a sycamore tree but others will feed on other deciduous tree leaves like horse chestnut. They are herbivores. The adult moth itself is quite boring in comparison. It's grey brown and well camouflaged with mottled markings - it obviously has to worry about ending up in the middle of a food chain. btw I took it to a table to take a better photograph - it only eats leaves - not wood!
